Brewers at Giants, Game 3

Baseball is only game. There is so much more the life than baseball. On Thursday, we were all reminded of that fact. First with news that Angles pitcher Nick Adenhart died at the age of 22. Adenhart died just several hours after pitching 6 scoreless innings when the car he was riding in was struck by a van that ran a red light. The driver of the van is said to have a blood alcohol level far above the legal limit. This is a tragedy no matter who it happens to. Not just because he was a young promising player, but because a life was lost. Thoughts and prayers of baseball fans everywhere go out to the Adenhart family and the Angels organization.

The Brewers took on the Giants for their final game in San Fransisco this year. It was a good thing because they were bad. The were unable to get anything going against Matt Cain and Manny Parra was less than perfect. In the bottom of the 9th Mike Cameron, who had an excellent series, hit a squarely hit line drive off of the head of Giants relief pitcher Joe Martinez. The ball caromed off of the side of his head and ended up at the backstop. Mike Cameron saw what happened and looked away instantly. Mike Cameron was noticeably upset by what happened as he crouched down at second base with his head in his hands. Cameron has always been a classy player and what I consider to be a true meaning of a role model. For a second time on Thursday we were reminded that baseball is only a game as everyone watched helplessly. Martinez was able to walk off the field, but was taken to the hospital for CT scans.

The Brewers fell to the Giants 7-1 and to a 1-2 record on the year. Looking ahead to Friday, the Brewers have their home opener against central division rival Chicago Cubs. Braden Looper makes his Brewer debut has he takes on Rich Harden.

The Golden Brat goes to Mike Cameron for his great series at the plate, and for remaining classy and when hitting a line drive off of another player. I hope Cameron continues to swing the bat well and does not let this affect him too much.

Brewers at Giants, Game 2

After a disappointing loss on opening day, the Brewers took the field on Wednesday night as Yovani Gallardo took on 5-time Cy Young winner Randy Johnson. Johnson started strong striking out 2 Brewers in the first. Mike Cameron was able to get all of a Johnson pitch in the 2nd inning for a solo home run and give the Brewers a 1-0 lead. Gallardo found himself in some trouble in the first but escaped without surrendering a run. In the 5th inning Bill Hall hit a 2 out double and the Giants decided to intentionally walk Jason Kendall to get to Yovani Gallardo. Johnson was able to get 2 strikes on Gallardo pretty quickly. Johnson gave Giants catcher Benji Molina a head nod to indicate that he wanted to challenge the young Brewers pitcher up in the strike zone. I am not sure if Yovani saw the head nod, but he saw the next pitch and crushed it over the left field fence for a 3-run home run. Johnson would leave the game after the 5th inning giving up 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 7. Gallardo would finish the night pitching 6 2/3 innings giving up just 2 earned runs. Todd Coffey came in the 7th inning with the bases loaded and got Benji Molina to ground out to end the threat. Coffey pitched a solid 8th inning and the Brewers headed to the bottom of the 9th with a 4-2 lead. Carlos Villanueva was given the chance to collect the save with Trevor Hoffman on the DL. The young right handed reliever made the best of his chance has he mowed down the Giants in order to collect his first career 1 inning save (2 previous saves had been 3 inning saves). Could this pitching combination be the future for the Brewers?

Let's hope that Manny Parra has a solid outing Thursday as he takes on Matt Cain.

Opening Day, Brewers at Giants Game 1

Finally the 2009 baseball season is underway. Many of us were left wanting more after the Brewers historic run back to the playoffs last year. October seems like it was years ago and expectations from Brewers fans are high. Many of the experts are writing the Brewers off for 2009 saying that their offense will be good, but the lack the pitching to make a run at the playoffs. Many experts pick our beloved Brewers to finish 3rd in the NL Central Division. We will have to see what happens............

Anyways, game almost never happened. There was talk of a rain delay, then the game started on time. Jeff Suppan took the hill for the Crew and 2008 Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum was pitching for the Giants. The Crew made the young pitcher work and was able to chase him out of the game after just 3 innings, and hanging 3 runs on him. Jeff Suppan struggled from the get go. He gave up a 3-run triple in the first, and a 2-run homer in the 4th. Suppan only made it innings giving up 6 runs on 6 hits. The bullpen was not much better. Seth McClung gave up 1 run in 2 innings, but walked 3 batters. Dave Bush pitched 1 inning to get some work out of the bullpen, but gave up 2 runs. Jorge Julio got some work in the 8th inning and gave up a solo shot to Randy Winn.

The Brewers had some bright spots at the plate. Rickie Weeks went 2-3 with a walk and was also hit by a pitch. For those Rickie-Haters that is an OBP of .800. I know it is only the first game, but I want to give him some credit for the amount of heat that he takes. Mike Cameron was 1-1 with 4 walks and 0 strikeouts. The Brewers also stole 4 bases off of former gold glove catcher Benji Molina. Rickie and Ryan Braun had 1 a piece and Mike Cameron stole 2 bases.

Looking ahead to game to the young ace of the Brewers staff, Yovani Gallardo pitches against former Cy Young winner Randdy Johnson. My prediction is Ryan Braun goes yard off Johnson today.

No more MVB this year instead I will give out a Golden Brat to the player of the game.

The Golden Brat goes to Rickie Weeks for being patient at the plate and getting on base like a lead off hitter should. Since it is opening day I will also be giving out some Golden Sauerkraut to Mike Cameron just because I can.

Starting Pitching Preview

Here is a look at what the Brewers starting rotation might look like in 2009.

Yovani Gallardo is the Brewers ace, regardless if Ken Macha wants to put that label on him or not. Gallardo may not be the opening day starter, but I look for him to have a breakout year and emerge as the Brewers ace.
PREDICTION: ERA-3.35 WINS-15 K's-193

Manny Parra is another youngster that came into his own last season. Manny tailed off at the end of last year, but i look for him to regain his confidence and put together a complete season for the Brewers.
PREDICTION: ERA-3.88 WINS-13 K's-161

Braden Looper was the Brewers big off season acquisition for the starting rotation. Looper is not an over whelming talent, but he is very consistent and should have a very solid for the Brewers this year.
PREDICTION: ERA-3.98 WINS-11 K's-111

Dave Bush has been consistent in his time spent with the Brewers. I look for Dave Bush to really step up and prove that he is a legit #3-4 starter. Without a top tier ace the Brewers will need to get solid consistent starts from the back of their rotation. Bush will fill this roll.
PREDICTION: ERA-4.10 WINS-12 K's-117

Jeff Suppan will round out the Brewers rotation. Suppan has underachieved since signing that big contract with the Brewers 2 years ago. Unfortunately I do not look for Suppan to be much better than he has in the past. He will win some games behind the Brewers offense, but he will get rocked a couple of times this year too.
PREDICTION: ERA-4.37 WINS-10 K's-98

Other possible candidates:

Seth McClung will make a few starts here and there and will be solid when he does. "Chuckie" will have a strong year no matter where/when he is pitching.

Chris Capuano was also my dark horse to crack the starting rotation back in November, and I stand by that. Cappy is making strong progress in his rehab for his 2nd Tommy John surgery. i m not sure who would be knocked out of the rotation should Capuano complete his comeback, but when can cross that bridge when we get there.

Bullpen Preview

Here is a look into what the Brewers Bullpen may look like this year.

Miller Park is adding a new experience this year, "Hell's Bells." Yes ladies and gentlemen Hell's Bells will ring each time the Brewers new closer Trevor Hoffman takes the mound. Trevor signed with Brewers this off season after leaving San Diego after 17 seasons as a Padre. I look for the 41 year old to settle right in and show everyone that he is the all time saves leader for reason.
PREDICTION: ERA-2.68 SAVES-43 K's-41

Seth McClung will see some time as a long reliever, setup man and will make some spot starts as well. McClung is a very important part of this team and will have a very strong 2009 season.

Carlos Villanueva should be Trevor Hoffman's shadow. Carlos is a closer in waiting and change-up specialist much like Hoffman. Please Carlos, take advantage of the time you have with one of the best closers of all time.

Mitch Stetter will be the Brewers left handed specialist replacing Brain Shouse.

David Riske is back from surgery and will hopefully fulfill his potential when the Brewers signed him prior to the 2008 season.

Mark DiFelice is making a very strong case for making them team. he pitched very well for the Italian team in the World Baseball Classic and has been impressive in his team with the Brewers. It will be hard to keep him off of the Brewers opening day roster.

The 7th roster spot will be fought for by Todd Coffey, Jorge Julio, Eduardo Morlan and RJ Swindle. My guess is that Todd Coffey will round out the rest of the Brewers bullpen. Coffey was picked up by the Brewers late last season and was very strong for them in the final weeks. I look for the Crew to reward him and give him the final bullpen spot.

Catching Preview

Here is a look at the Brewers behind the plate this season.

The starting catcher will be Jason Kendall. The work he did behind the plate last year was unreal. he helped the young pitchers develop last year, i.e. Seth McClung. Kendall will return to action this year as the primary catcher for the Brewers, but new skipper Ken Macha said he will try to sit Kendall once a week.
PREDICTION: AVG-.241 RBI-48 HR-2 SB-4

Backing up Kendall will be Mike Rivera. Rivera did a very solid job in limited action for the Brewers last year. Rivera should get a chance to show what he can do when giving a little more playing time this year. Waiting in the wings is prospect Angel Salome. Salome is at least one year away from breaking into the majors, maybe 2, but be on the look out for this little guy in the near future.

Infield Preview

Here is a look at how the Brewers infield may look this year.

First base is of course the big fella Prince Fielder. Prince carried the Brewers offense down the stretch of the season. Prince had some criticism about his weight the past year, but reported to camp with his wallet a little fatter thanks to a new 2 year deal, and his belt a little tighter thanks to dropping some pounds in the off season. Look for Prince to return to his All-Star caliber form this year.
PREDICTION: AVG-.280 RBI-110 HR-42 SB-3

Rickie Weeks has the pressure of any of the infielders. Rickie will be the starting second baseman for the Brewers and will more than likely hit lead off for the Crew as well. Rickie will need to improve his defense in the field, but more importantly he will need to be more patient at the plate. Brewers new bench coach Willie Randolph will be spending a lot of time with Weeks this spring.
PREDICTION: AVG-.250 RBI-53 HR-17 SB-27

JJ Hardy owns the starting spot at short stop. I look for JJ to have a very solid year in the field, but to have an excellent year at the plate. JJ should be hitting in the number 2 spot in the order ahead of Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. JJ is one of the best, if not the best, fastball pitcher on the team. Hitting ahead of the big guns should ensure he sees plenty of fastballs.
PREDICTION: AVG-.278 RBI-77 HR-27 SB-5

Bill Hall will get a chance to be the everyday starter at third base, but may see his role cut down to a platoon if he he is still unable to hit right handed pitching this year. Hall had the Jason Kendall treatment this off season and received lasik eye surgery. A calf injury has sidelined Hall for much of spring so far, but look for him to break out this season.
PREDICTION: AVG-.258 RBI-71 HR-23 SB-11

There are still bench spots to be won. With top prospects Mat Gamel and Alcides Escobar still about a year away from breaking through, the Brewers will look to veterans to back up the infield. Craig Counsell has his spot locked up. Early on I though the same was true for Mike Lamb, but the emergence of Casey McGehee. The Crew claimed McGehee from the Cubs this off season and the versatile McGehee should make the team. He is hitting .423 right now and has the ability to play 3rd and 2nd and even catch in emergency situations. McGehee would also be the only right handed hitting bench player other than back up catcher Mike Rivera. Brad Nelson should also make the team as an infield/outfield back up and a power left handed bat off of the bench.

Outfield Preview

The Crew obviously has their starters in the outfield etched in stone barring any injury or unforeseen trade.

In left field of course is reigning NL All Star team starter Ryan Braun. Ryan will be entering his third season in the majors and his second full season in the outfield. Look for Ryan to have another MVP caliber season and more than likely find himself starting in the All-Star game. PREDICTION: AVG-.300 RBI-106 HR-45 SB-13

In center field Mike Cameron will be covering a lot ground and making great plays in the field. There is no doubt that Mike Cameron is a big reason that Ryan Braun had such a smooth transition to playing in the outfield last season. Cameron was nearly traded ti the Yankees this off season, but the rest of the Crew is undoubtedly happy to see him back in a Brewers uniform.
PREDICTION: AVG-.240 RBI-67 HR-26 SB-8

Corey Hart should have right field locked down. Corey started the 2008 season off very well, but seemingly fell off of a cliff the last 2 months of the season. Corey seemed to be guessing at the plate and swinging at any pitch. I look for Corey to bounce back and put together a complete season.
PREDICTION: AVG-.271 RBI-81 HR-25 SB-26

The back ups is where everything gets interesting. Tony Gwynn Jr. was the favorite to win the back up spot , but an injury has prevented him from participating much in spring training. In his absence Chris Duffy has really shined. Duffy is currently hitting .361 with 7 extra base hits and 8 RBI's. Veteran Trot Nixon came into camp trying to battle for the back up outfield spot, but has really struggled to this point hitting only .103. The big surprise is Brad Nelson. Nelson is a first baseman by nature, but has the ability to play either corner outfield position. Nelson would provide the Brewers with a left handed power bat off of the bench if he makes the team.
PREDICTION: The Brewers keep Chris Duffy has the utility back up outfielder and Brad Nelson as an outfield/infield back up.

Out on a Limb: Bold Brewers Off Season Predictions

I know it has been a awhile since I have posted, and I apologize to all of my faithful readers, both of them (including myself), but here are my bold predictions for the Brewers Off Season.

The Not so Bold, Bold Prediction:
CC Sabathia will not be in a Brewers uniform next year.

A little bolder:
The Brewers are better off if they do not CC Sabathia. Before you click the little 'X' in your upper right corner to close your browser, let me explain. The unofficially offered Sabathia a 5 year $100 million contract. You don't have to be a math wiz to figure out that it equates to $20 million a year. If the Brewers stretch their payroll to $90 million next year, CC's contract would make up 22% of that money. Can the Brewers really be a playoff caliber team with almost a fourth of their payroll for one player. Probably not. That money would be better spent on a player like Ben Sheets and a reliever and maybe even to help out with our arbitration eligible players.

Kinda bold:
Ben Sheets resigns with the Brewers. After the Brewers fail to retain the services of Sabathia, their #1 priority would be resigning Ben Sheets. I am all for signing him to an incentive based 3-4 year deal. He is still an ace and with Yovani Gallardo we would have a solid 1-2 punch. I would look to pay Ben between $13-15 million per year.

Obvious, but bold:
The Brewers will trade Mike Cameron, Bill Hall and a young pitching prospect like Mark Rogers or Chris Narveson to the Yankees for Melky Cabrera and Ian Kennedy. The Yankees obviously like Cameron, and Cabrera is a young switching hitting center fielder that could fill the void left by Cameron. That part of the swap makes perfect sense, where it gets interesting is adding Bill Hall the Brewers would love to move Bill Hall and his salary, the questions is wither the Yankees want him and would they be willing to give up on Kennedy after one season of struggles. Kennedy and Rogers could both benefit from a change of scenery. Getting rid of Bill Hall would mean the Brewers could move JJ Hardy to third base and bring in the exciting Alcides Escobar to play short. The Brewers would have that side of the field locked down.

Pretty bold prediction:
The Brewers would not trade Prince or JJ Hardy this off-season. If the Brewers do not resign Sabathia, they will be able to afford the arbitration raises both these players will receive. Let's face it if the Brewers do not have elite pitching they will need to score as many runs as possible and JJ and Prince are 2 of our best hitters.

Darkest and boldest prediction:
Chris Capuano will make the Brewers starting rotation at some point next year. Yes, I said it. You wait and see, if this happens, I said it first. Chris is coming off of his 2nd Tommy John's surgery, never good, but he also has one of the best work ethics in baseball. If he is able to pitch, he will be ready. The Brewers have very few left handed pitching options, and if Capuano returns as the pitcher from his All-Star season, there is no way we could keep him out of the rotation. we will just have to wait and see how is arm heals.

Brewers NLDS Preview

Yes, Ladies and Gentleman, the Milwaukee Brewers have ended their 26 year playoff drought. Tomorrow, the Brewers will take on the Philadelphia Phillies for game one of the best of 5, National League Divisional Series. The Phillies will send their young left-handed phenom, Cole Hamels to the mound. The Crew is going to counter with a phenom of their own, Yovani Gallardo. Gallardo you will recall tore his ACL on May 1st in a game against the Chicago Cubs. The 22 year old pitcher heals fast and made a start last Thursday against the Pirates and pitched 4 innings and striking out 7 batters. Yovani is relatively unknown around the league, but Brewers fans know his stuff and expect him to be on his game Wednesday afternoon.

The Brewers are going to have their usual lineup against left-handed pitching under Dale Sveum:

Pirates vs Brewers Game 2, September 24th

Believe it or not the Brewers are once again tied for the Wild Card lead with only 4 games left in the season. Wednesday night's game was a good one. The Brewers trailed 1-0 going into the 4th inning. The Brewers offense exploded in the 4th, well kind of. Mike Cameron lead off the inning with a single, followed by a walk to Bill Hall. Ryan Braun then hit a lazy fly ball to center field and there was 1 out. Prince Fielder then laced a single that scored Cameron and tied the game at 1,Hardy, Weeks and Kendall all walked, giving the Brewers the lead at 3-1. CC Sabathia took over from there. CC had an amazing game pitching on 3 days rest. He only allowed one run and struck out 11 batters in 7 innings. The Brewers cruised to a 4-2 win, and with the Cubs beating the Mets, the Brewers are now tied for the wild card.

Most Valuable Brewer: CC Sabathia, he is amazing!

Pirates vs Brewers Game 1, September 23rd

The Pirates came to town for a much needed series with the Crew. The Brewers have played very well against the Bucos and have a 11-1 record against them this year. The Brewers got off to an early lead when Ryan Braun hit a RBI triple and scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first. Dave Bush then Gave up 3 runs in the second and the Brewers Trailed 3-2 for most of the game. The Brewers scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th to take a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately Guillermo Mota gave up a 2-run home run in the top of the 8th to give the lead back to the Pirates. Jason Kendall hit an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to tie the game. Still tied in the bottom of the 9th Ryan Braun hit a 2 out single that brought Prince Fielder to the plate. The Big Fella crushed a 2-0 pitch into the Tundra Territory and the Brewers had a 7-5 walk-off win.

Most Valuable Brewer: Prince Fielder, he has been carrying this team on his big vegan shoulders.

Brewers vs Reds Series

The Series was not good at all for the Brewers. They went 1-2 in a series that they needed to win at least 2. Luckily the Mets went 1-2 over that time too, so the Crew remains a game and a half behind them for the wild card. The Brewers have off on Monday, then return home for a 3 game series with the Pirates. The Brewers are 11-1 against the Pirates this year, and need to win all 3 of the games at home. On Monday the Mets open up a 4 game series with the Cubs. The Cubs have nothing to play for at this point, but should be starting to get their rotation in order and may use their front line pitchers towards the end of the series. I just hope the Cubs make an honest effort at and do not just lay down for the Mets so the Brewers don't make it in the playoffs.

Brewers vs Cubs Game 3, September 18th

I am running out of words.........What looked to be masterfully managed game and a very well played game by the Brewers turned terribly wrong. Dave Bush made the start for the Brewers a day earlier than originally planned, but pitched very well. The Brewers were able to make Rich Harden work in the first inning, they made him throw 38 total pitches, and had the bases loaded, but were only able to score 1 run. The Brewers were down 2-1 going into the 6th inning, then they really got going. The Crew was able to put 4 runs in the inning and added an insurance run in the 9th to lead 6-2 going into the bottom of the 9th. Closer Salomon Torres came in and recorded the first 2 outs of the inning with no problems. Then it wasn't pretty, Aramis Ramierz doubled and Jim Edmonds singled bringing up Geovanny Soto. Soto tied the game with 1 swing of the bat. The Brewers were lucky to get out of the inning and into extra innings. Friday's starter Seth McClung was forced to enter the game, and he pitched very well in the 10th and 11th striking out 4 batters. The Brewers were unable to score in the 10th or 11th, and were unable to capitalize in the 12th with runners on 3rd and 2nd with 0 outs. Carlos Villanueva pitched the 12th and the Cubs were able to score and win the game 7-6.

Most Valuable Brewer: Dale Sveum, he managed his bullpen very well and put the team in a chance to win. His only error was turning the team over to their most trusty pitcher this season.

Brewers vs Cubs Game 2, September 17th

The Milwaukee Brewers were able to keep pace with a win at Wrigley Field, but still had their playoff chances hurt. That sums up much of how the Brewers final months of the season had been going. The Brewers started of very will, loading the bases with no outs and Prince Fielder at the plate. Coming off of a 2 homer night, Prince knew he could get the Brewers a big lead with a single swing of the bat, and he did just that. Prince hit a 3-RBI double down the right field line giving the Crew a 3-0 lead. Ben Sheets started the game and gave up only 1 hit in the first 2 innings. The hit happened to be a solo home run to Aramis Ramirez, and the 2 innings would be his only work. Sheets would leave with what was being described as forearm tightness, but would later reveal that he has been having elbow soreness for weeks. The Brewers would have to turn their hopes over to their bullpen. Mark DiFelice pitched 2 very solid innings and even laid down a sacrifice bunt. Todd Coffey followed with a well pitched 5th inning. Carlos Villanueva and Mitch Stetter combined to get out of the 6th unscaved. Eric Gagne looked very solid in the 7th. Guillermo Mota followed with a good 8th inning, and the Brewers headed to the bottom of the 9th with a 6-1 lead. Salomon Torres came in to get some work in the 9th and gave up 1 run, but the Brewers escaped with a 6-2 win. Dale Sveum was also given the first win of his managerial career.

Most Valuable Brewer: Mark DiFelice, came in and pitched the biggest 2 innings of his career. If that was good enough for Dale Sveum to give him the game ball, it is good enough for me to give him MVB honors.

Brewers vs Cubs Game 1, September 16th

Well the Dale Sveum era has officially started and in Milwaukee. Dale started off things withe shaking up the lineup, and I have to say that i like the lineup he put together:

Unfortunately the new lineup did not lead to many runs in Chicago. CC Sabathia would get his first loss of the season giving up 4 runs in 7 innings of work. Fielder provided most of the offense for the Brewers. He hit a monster 2 run homer in the 6th, and added a solo shot to lead off the 8th. Prince's biggest at bat came with runners on 1st and 3rd with 2 outs in the 9th with the Brewers down 5-4. He worked the count full, but struck out looking on a 3-2 slider by Kerry Wood that was right down the middle. In Prince's defense is was a good pitch, and the first breaking ball that Wood through that was halfway decent. The Brewers fell to the Cubs 5-4.

Most Valuable Brewer: Dale Sveum for making his big league managerial debut. Let's get some wins now buddy.

Yada, Yada, Yada....Brewers face Brett Myers on 3 days rest and he pitches a complete game 2 hitter....and Brewers Lose.

The Crew has blown a big lead in the wild card race and are now tied with the Phillies who have a much easier schedule down the stretch. The Brewers are 3-11 in their last 14 games and are playing their worst baseball of the year.

But Brewer fans, Tuesday is another day and the Brewers travel to Chicago to take on the Cubs. It is September, and anything is possible.........

Brewers vs Phillies Game 1, September 11th

The Brewers traveled to Philadelphia for the first of a four game series with the Phillies. Ben Sheets took the hill for the Brewers and was less than perfect. He gave up a 2 run homer to Phillies slugger Ryan Howard, and an RBI double to Howard later in the game. JJ Hardy hit his 24th home run of the year, and Prince Fielder finally added his 29th of the year, but the Brewers dropped game one of this important series.

Friday's game was postponed due to rain, this could be the break that the Brewers needed. The Brewers can take the day to regroup and get ready to play baseball. The last 3 games of the series are important and their offense needs to break out. Every batter is "pressing" at the plate and trying to hit a home run every pitch. Let's go Crew and take some games in Philly!

Most Valuable Brewer: Prince Fielder for finally breaking out of his home run slump, hopefully Braun can follow in his footsteps.

Reds vs Brewers Game 3, September 10th

Wednesday, the Brewers hoped to avoid the sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. CC Sabathia took the hill and tried to be the Brewers savior once again. CC was dominating early. He was striking out Reds. He gave up a few hits here and there, but never was in real trouble. in the 5th inning with the Brewers ahead 1-0, CC found himself in his first real jam and gave up a 3 run homer to Jerry Hairston. CC would pitch through the 7th inning and leave with the Brewers still trailing 3-1. The Brewers added a run in the 7th. The Brewers finally got going in the 8th inning. With bases loaded and no outs, Tony Gywnn Jr. grounded into a double play scoring JJ Hardy. Mike Cameron then singled to score Ryan Braun and give the Brewers a 4-3 lead. Salomon Torres came on and struck out the side, preserving the win for the Crew. The Brewers got a much needed win and hope to keep things going as they start a series with the Phillies on Thursday.

Most Valuable Brewer: CC Sabathia pitched 7 innings, gave 3 runs on 8 hits, and struck out 8 batters. CC also went 1-2 at the plate with an RBI. The Brewers are now 12-1 when CC Sabathia is the starting pitcher. Not a bad deal for the Brewers.

Reds vs Brewers Game 2, September 9th

The Major League Baseball schedule consists of 162 games, the Brewers have played 145 games this year. With 17 games remaining the Brewers find themselves in trouble. They are lucky to be clinging to a 3 game lead in the wild card race. There are not too many positives to come way from the Brewers latest loss Tuesday night at the hands of the Reds. The Brewers looked to be in business in the 1st inning with the bases loaded and 1 out. The Brewers were unable to bust the game open, and were only able to score 1 run. Jeff Suppan started the game well, but got into some trouble in the 6th inning, giving up a 2 run homer to Edwin Encarnacion, and a solo shot to promising young outfielder Jay Bruce. The Crew continued to struggle at the plate. In the bottom of the 7th, after a Mike Cameron strike out, Bill Hall was walked and Jason Kendal was hit by a pitch. Ray Durham then pinch hit for the pitchers spot and he hit a 3 run homer to tie the game at 4. The Brewers would then continue to frustrate Brewer fans everywhere due to their inability to execute with runners in scoring piston and score runs when needed. Long story shirt, the Brewers went into extra innings and fell to the Reds in 11th inning by a score of 5-4.

Most Valuable Brewer: Ray Durham, he hit a huge pinch hit home run to tie the game.

Reds vs Brewers Game 1, September 8th

The Brewers faced All-Star pitcher Edison Volquez, and sent Dave Bush to the mound. The Brewers were one the board early, and tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the second. Durable catcher Jason Kendall was at the plate with a runner on when he hit his 2nd home run of the year to give the Crew a 3-1 lead. JJ Hardy added his 23rd home run of the year in the 5th inning and the Brewer lead was stretched to 4-1. Dave Bush was pitching very well, and had not given up a run since the 2nd inning. He did give up a solo home run to Joey Votto with 2 outs in the 8th, but finished the inning and leaving the Brewers with a 4-2 lead. Closer Salomon Torres came on to close the game, and that's when everything fell apart. The first 2 batters got hits, he walked the third, and it was all down hill from there. He Gave up 3 runs and the lead and the Brewers lost to the Reds 5-4. Not a whole lot to say other than the fact that we need to start winning if we want to make our post season dreams a reality.

Most Valuable Brewer: Jason Kendall, who finally hit home run #2 and 2 RBI's. His work behind the plate often goes unnoticed, but he is a big reason why the Brewers pitchers are having success.

Padres vs Brewers Game 4, September 7th

For Brewer fans this games was one to forget, for Padre fans it is on to remember. It was not pretty as Manny Parra took on Chris Young of the Padres. The action picked up in the top of third inning. Parra should have been out of the inning, but key errors by Bill Hall and JJ Hardy kept the inning a live and the wheels fell off for Para. He gave up 5 runs in the inning, none of which were earned. Manny also allowed a solo home run in the 5th inning and would be pulled after 5 innings of work. Meanwhile Chris young was working on a perfect game that was broken up by Gabe Kapler when he homered of Young with 2 outs in the 8th inning. David Riske gave up 4 earned runs in the 7th inning. The only positive from this game is that Mat Gamel, Angel Salome and Alcides Escobar all got an at bat during the 9th inning. The Brewers fell to the Padres 10-1.

Most Valuable Brewer: Mat Gamel, who recorded his first big league hit, which happened to be a double. His career batting average is now .500 and his career OPS is .1500. I get the feeling this kid will be winning more MVB's in the future.

Padres vs Brewers Game 3, September 6th

"A Miller Park Masterpiece!!" were the words that resonated in Brewers fans everywhere as they watched the game end on Saturday night. In one of the best pitching match ups of the year, Ben Sheets took the mound against Jake Peavy. Both pitchers came out and showed everyone why people associate their names with the word "ACE." The Brewers were able to grab a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Prince Fielder doubled in Ryan Braun. This was the only run that Peavy would surrender as he pitched 7 strong innings giving up only the 1 run and striking out 5. As well as Peavy pitched, Sheets was better. ben Would go the distance and try to record his 3rd complete game shut out of the year. Ben took gave up only 3 hits in the first 8 innings, but gave up 2 hits in the 9th and found himself in trouble with 2 on and 2 out. Benny was able to work his way out of it and induce a ground ball to 2nd base and the game was over. According to the Brewers TV announcers, Ben Sheets was just pitched a Miller Park Masterpiece! Nicely said and nicely done.

Padres vs Brewers Game 2, September 5th

The B-52 Bomber took the mound for the Crew on Friday to try and break the Brewers loosing trend. CC was up to usually tricks of dominating opposing batters. CC was striking out Padres left and right, he left after the 7th inning with 9 strike outs and only giving up 1 run. CC Got the job done at the plate too. He went 2-3 with an RBI and put the Brewers in a position to win with a 2-1 lead when he left. Enter Eric Gagne. My goodness, I have defended this guy form day 1, but my patience are running thin. Gagne gave up a game tying home run to the first batter he faced. Gagne was able to finish off the inning without giving up another run. The Brewers were unable to score in the 8th and the 9th inning despite having runners on base. The Brewers once again were headed into extra innings. The 10th inning was uneventful. In the top of the 11th the Brewers found themselves in a whole heap of trouble. David Riske began the 11th with a fly out to right field. He then walked the next batter and gave up a single to Brian Giles. Brian Shouse was then called in and need only one pitch to induce a 1-6-3 double play. Into the bottom of the 11th we go. JJ Hardy found himself 0-5 in the game, but came to the plate with runners at 3rd and first with only 1 out. JJ found himself down 1-2 in a hurry, but was able to fight off the next 2 pitches. On his 3rd 1-2 pitch JJ hit a line drive single to left field and the Brewers won the game 3-2. I am concerned with the Brewers inability to manufacture runs and come up with key hits when they are needed. Nevertheless, the Brewers won and that is what good teams do.

Most Valuable Brewer: Brian Shouse, the Brewers needed the lefty to come in and get them out of a jam, and he did just that. Well done Brian Shouse, it isn't often that someone out shines someone who gets a walk off hit, but you did just that.

Padres vs Brewers Game 1, September 4th

Jeff Suppan started against the Padres as the Brewers looked to end their loosing streak and start a winning streak. The Brewers struggled throughout the game and hit a dismal 0-9 with runners in scoring position. The Brewers were only able to put up 2 runs on Shawn Estes. One of the runs was a solo home run by JJ Hardy his 22nd of the year. Mike Cameron also had a triple and a run scored. Jeff Suppan on the other hand gave up 5 runs (4 earned) over 5 1/3 innings of work. The Brewers fell to the Padres 5-2. Hopefully the Brewers get start their winning streak with CC Sabathia on the mound Friday.

Most Valuable Brewer: JJ Hardy who provided most of the Brewers offense when he hit his 22nd home run of the year.

Mets vs Brewers 3 game series, September 1-3

Sorry I have not updated the blog recently. I have had some work issues and some personal issues, but all is cleared up so let's talk Brewers baseball. If I could pick a series not to talk about it would have been this one. So I will make this post brief, but will get back to my regular postings after game 1 of the Padres series. The Brewers dropped 3 games to the Mets, but lost no ground in the NL Central because the Cubs also dropped 3 games to the Houston Astros. Kinda makes you wonder what if we could have won some games. Anyway, the Brewers control their own destiny at this point and should not worry about what any other team is doing until they take care of business first. I look for the Brewers to bounce back in a big way with this series against the bottom dwelling San Diego Padres. Let's go Brew Crew!!

Brewers vs Pirates Game 3, August 31st

WELCOME TO HISTORY!!!!! Regardless of what the official scorer in Pittsburgh has to say, CC Sabathia just threw the second no hitter in Milwaukee Brewers history!!! The game started out with a band when Rickie Weeks hit his 10th career lead off home run. The Brewers had a 1-0 lead, and that is all the Brewers would need. CC was mowing down Pirate hitters left and right. He was mixing up his pitches well, and there were not many well hit balls by Pittsburgh. In the 5th inning Andy LaRoche hit a little dribbler back to the mound, and CC tried to barehand the ball, but missed and LaRoche was safe at first. The offical scorer had called it a hit by the the time LaRoche was standing on first. LaRoache was only halfway down the line when Sabathia tried to barehanded the ball when he easily could have used his glove, and thrown LaRoche out. Nevertheless, it was ruled a hit and that was the only hit Pittsburgh would get. Young Pittsburgh pitcher Jeff Karstens was pitching well, and hadn't given up another run to the Brewers until the 7th inning. Milwaukee would score 4 runs in the 8th and add 2 more in the 9th. CC Sabathia continued to sit down Pirate hitters and after Corey Hart recorded the last out by catching a fly ball, the Brewers mildly celebrated. After the game Brewer 3rd baseman Bill Hall said the team was celebrating like it was a no hitter, and the Brewers were planning to appeal the ruling by the official scorer.

Most Valuable Brewer: Obviously CC Sabathia, who pitched 9 complete innings giving up 0 or 1 hits, giving up 0 runs, and striking 11 batters. CC should be only the 2nd pitcher in Brewers history to throw a no hitter.

Brewers vs Pirates Game 2, August 30th

Jeff Suppan took on Pirates pitcher Paul Maholm Saturday night in Pittsburgh. The Brewers found some offense in the top of teh 2nd inning when Corey Hart hit is 20th home run of the year. The Brewers really broke the game open in the 6th inning when they put up 5 runs to take a 7-0 lead. Meanwhile, Suppan was pitching a very good game and pitched 7 strong innings giving up only 3 hits and 2 earned runs. Mike Cameron continued to stay hot on this road trip. He hit his 24th home ruin of the year, and had a total of 4 RBI's. The Brewers cruised to an easy 11-3 victory.

Most Valuable Brewer: Corey Hart! Corey became the first player in Brewers history to have back to back 20 home run and 20 steals in a single season. Well down Mr. Hart, i would like to see him have 5 straight 20/20 seasons. Corey also went 3-5 and scored 3 runs in the game Saturday night.

Brewers vs Pirates Game 1, August 29th

Friday night the Brewers traveled to Pittsburgh for a weekend series with the Pirates. The action started right away as Ryan Braun hit a 3 run home run in the first inning to give the Crew a 3-0 lead. Unfortunately, this was about it for action in this game. Dave Bush was on the mound for the Brewers and he had a very solid outing. Dave's only mistake in the games was a 5th inning solo home run to Nate McLouth. Bush pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up only 6 hits and one run. The Brewers would not scored again, but cruised to a 3-1 win, and Salomon Torres picked up his 26th save of the year.

Most Valuable Brewer: Ryan Braun who went 2-4 with 3 RBI's. Braun now has 34 home runs and 95 RBI's on the season.

Classless in St. Louis

Believe it or not I am beginning to hate the St. Louis Cardinals almost as much as the Chicago Cubs. At least when the Brewers play the Cubs they have some class (their fans don't, but that's another story). It all started last year when the Cardinals pitchers repeatedly hit Brewer batters. Caught up in the heat of the moment, and wanting to defend his players, Brewers manager Ned Yost returned some of that fire had Seth McClung plunk Albert Pujols. Fast forward to this year, the Brewers are completely manhandling the Cardinals. We finished the season series at 10-5. Also, if the season ended today the Brewers would win the wild card race, and the Cardinals would be on the outside looking in and sitting on their couches during the playoffs. The Cardinals said they have had a problem withe Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder "watching" home runs. Albert Pujols does the same exact thing, is it wrong when he does it? The Cardinals have a problem with the Brewers untucking their jerseys after a win. Seriously? The Brewers do this for team unity and it started out with Mike Cameron doing it as a tribute to his working class dad who would come home after a hard days work and untuck his shirt and relax. Here is an idea if you have a problem with the Brewers untucking their shirts after a win, beat them. I think the problem is they have watched the Brewers untuck their shirts twice as much as not watching them untuck their shirts. I found it interesting that during Wednesday's game Adam Wainwright had pinpoint control all night and did not walk a batter, but one pitch happened to get away from him, and it happened to hit Ryan Braun right in the ribs. Ryan Braun showed class and took his base. He did not charge the mound, and the Brewers did not retaliate. There were also Cardinal players throwing batting helmets on the ground after making outs. Not too classy. Then at the end of the night, when the Cardinals finally won, you would have thought they just clinched a playoff spot they way they were celebrating. Don't get me wrong, I am all for celebrating after a win, but don't call someone out for doing it then do it yourself. The Cardinals, a far more veteran team than the Brewers, have a lot of growing up to do. Stay classy St. Louis.

Brewers vs Cardinals Game 2, August 27th

It was definitely a playoff atmosphere in St. Louis Wednesday night. The Brewers looked to take sweep the short 2 game series against the Cardinals and ho up 5 1/2 games in the wild card race. Manny Parra made the start for the Brewers and he definitely pitched good enough to win pitching 6.0 innings giving up only 6 hits and 1 run while striking out 7. The Brewers were facing Adam Wainwright who gave up 3 runs in his 6 innings of work. The Brewers looked to be cruising to their second straight road sweep of the Cardinals. Carlos Villanueva came in during the 12th inning and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam without giving up a run and keeping Albert Pujols in the on deck circle. After the inning ended Villanueva was visibly excited and apparently Pujols thought something was directed towards the Cardinals dugout, and he and Villanueva exchanged some words. In the bottom of the 8th inning Pujols lead off with a double, then Ludwick doubled. Troy Glaus then followed with a single, when he was down 0-2 and Riske threw 2 pitches over the middle of the plate. The Cardinals scored 4 runs total in the 8th and had a 5-3 lead. The Cardinals new closer Chris Perez came in and struck out the side, and you would have thought the Cardinals had just won the division the way they were jumping all over the field. The Brewers lost and their wild card lead fell to 3 1/2 games. The Brewers travel to Pittsburgh this weekend for another series with the Pirates.

Most Valuable Brewer: Manny Parra for his very solid outing against the Cardinals. Parra pitched well enough to win and he should have gotten the victory.

Brewers vs Cardinals Game 1, August 26th

In what could be considered the most important game of the year so far, the Brewers went down to Busch Field Tuesday night for the first of a 2 game series with the Cardinals. Ben Sheets took the mound against Todd Wellemeyer. The Brewers hit the ball very well in the first inning and had bases loaded, but only scored 1 run on a Prince Fielder single. Sheets found himself in some trouble early, but always seemed to work out of it and come out clean. The Brewers added a second run in the 3rd inning on a Prince Fielder ground out after JJ Hardy lead off the inning with a stand up triple. Ben Sheets still had the game locked down, and would leave after 6 innings of work with a 5-0 lead after Ryan Braun belted a 2 run home run. Sheets would give up 5 hits and 2 walks, but surrender 0 runs. The Brewers bullpen did an excellent job only giving up 2 hits in their collective 3 innings of work. The Brewers really made a statement in the 9th inning when the scored 7 runs. Highlighted by a 2 run Bill Hall home run. The Crew came out and made a statement when they had to. At worst they leave St. Louis with the same 3 1/2 game lead on the wild card race, at best the leave with a 5 1/2 game lead. I Look for the Brewers to come out and make a statemnet Wednesday night.

Most Valuable Brewer: Ben Sheets, he pitched 6 strong innings, and held the Cardinals scoreless in a big game that they had to win.

Pirates vs Brewers Game 3, August 24th

Break out the brooms because the Milwaukee Brewers just swept the Pittsburgh Pirates right out of Wisconsin! CC Sabathia made the start for the Brewers, but unlike his previous starts in a Brewers uniform, he did not go the distance. CC had a solid start throwing 96 pitches in just 6 innings of work, but gave up only 1 earned run. The Brewers scored 2 runs in the 6th behind a Mike Cameron RBI single and Gabe Kapler had an RBI single when he pinch hit for Sabathia. David Riske then gave the run back to the Pirates in the 7th inning, prevent Sabathia from earning the win. In the bottom of the 8th Prince Fielder drew a lead off walk, but Corey Hart did not bunt him over and hit into a double play instead. The following batter Mike Cameron hit a home run and instead of it being a 4-2 game, it was a 3-2 game. That was significant because Salomon Torres would give up a run in the 9th and blow the save. The Brewers once again the Brewers were headed to extra innings. After a scoreless 10th and 11th inning Carlos Villanueva found himself in a bases loaded jam with no outs. Brewers nation held their collective breathes as Ned Yost brought in Guillermo Mota. Mota induced a shallow fly ball to center field, that did not allow the runner to tag, followed by a strike out, and ending with a little roller back to the mound that easily retired the runner. After a lead off ground out by Craig Counsell, Rickie Weeks drew a walk and stole second base. In sweet poetic justice, on JJ Hardy bobble head day, JJ Hardy singled to center field, and Rickie Weeks came home to score.

Most Valuable Brewer: Mike Cameron. Cameron had some clutch hits and RBI's not to mention that he did go 5-5, hit his 23rd home run and has improved his batting average to .257. This is the Mike Cameron that Brewers fans were excited about when we signed him this winter.

Pirates vs Brewers Game 2, August 23rd

Believe it or not the Milwaukee Brewers are 20 games over .500! Jeff Suppan turned in a solid performance on Saturday night, going 7 innings and only giving up 3 runs. The Brewers gave Suppan some run support early, when they scored 2 runs in the first inning. Ryan Braun hit a solo home run in the 4th, and he added a 2 run double in the 5th. The Brewers were off to an early 6-0 lead. Suppan gave up 2 runs in the 6th, and one run in the 8th. Brian Shouse finished off the 8th inning and Salomon Torres recorded his 25th save in the 9th inning. The Brewers aded another game to their Wild Card led on the Cardinals, and kept pace with the Cubs with their win Saturday night. CC Sabathia is pitching on Sunday, so break out those brooms.

Most Valuable Brewer: Surprise, Surprise, Ryan Braun! Brauny went 2-4 with a home run (32), a double, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI's. Not a bad day if you ask me. He also has his batting average up to .302.

Pirates vs Brewers Game 1, August 22nd

The Cubs lost Friday afternoon, so the Brewers can make up some ground as they take on the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dave Bush was the starting pitcher for the Crew and he was a little shake early giving up a run in each of the first two innings. The Brewers however could not get things going at the plate until the 4th inning when Corey Hart doubled in Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder. Hart would later score in the inning off of a Bill Hall sacrifice fly. JJ Hardy added his 20th homer of the year in the 5th inning to give the Brewers a 4-2 lead. Dave Bush pitched the 7th inning giving up a solo home run to Brandon Moss. Bush's pitched 7 innings giving up 3 runs, another quality start for Bush, putting the Brewers in position to win. The Brewers exploded in the bottom of the 7th putting up 6 runs and stretching their lead to 10-3. Lance Nix lead off the inning for Bush. Rickie Weeks tripled in Nix and then scored on a JJ Hardy double. Hardy scored on a Ryan Braun double, who scored on a ground out by Prince. Mike Cameron hit his 22 home run of the season that also scored Corey Hart. Brewers reliever Eric Gagne gave up a run in the 8th and Seth McClung ended the game in the 9th. Big win for the Crew as the make up a game on the Cubs and move to 19 games over .500.

Most Valuable Brewer: JJ Hardy, who went 2-5 with a home run and a double scoring 2 runs and driving in 2 runs. JJ is now the 4th Brewers to have at least 20 home runs, and Corey Hart is knocking on that door with 19.

Astros vs Brewers Game 3, August 20th

The Brewers pleasant surprise Manny Parra took the mound on Wednesday in search of his 10th win of the season. The Brewers got off to a hot start in the first inning scoring 2 runs. The Brewers took a 3-0 lead in the 3rd inning when Prince Fielder got his second sacrifice fly of the game. The Brewers gave up 2 runs in the top of the 5th, but still lead 3-2. Manny Parra's night ended after the 5th giving up 6 hits and just 2 runs. Carlos Villanueva pitched 2 perfect innings, striking out 3. JJ Hardy added some much needed insurance runs when he blasted his 19th home run in the 7th inning. Eric Gagne pitched a very nice 8th inning to set up a save opportunity for Salomon Torres. Torres came on and pitched a perfect 9th inning on the way to his 24th save of the season.

Most Valuable Brewer: Rickie Weeks! Rickie was 0-1 at the plate, but walked 3 times and scored 3 runs. We need to see this type of production from our lead off hitter. Hopefully Rickie can get some confidence at the plate and get on base any way he can.

Astros vs Brewers Game 2, August 19th

Tuesday the Brewers looked to make it 2 in a row with Ben Sheets making the start against Brian Moehler of the Astros. The Brewers were doing well early scoring a run each of the first 2 innings. However, they would not score again. Sheets would give up 5 earned runs in only 6 innings of work. Sheets continues to struggle for the Brewers. If the Brewers make it to the playoffs, and hope to go deep into October, they are going to need solid work out of the aces. Sheets needs relax and find his zone again. The Astros have a very strong lineup, but still not as good as the Cubs. I think Sheets will be able to lock it in and give the Brewers a chance to do something great this post season.

Most Valuable Brewer: Jason Kendall, he went 3-4 and was the only real highlight for the Brewers in this one.

Astros vs Brewers Game 1, August 18th

The B-52 Bomber, CC Sabathia once again took the hill for the Brewers, and once again he was lights out. This is the type of return Doug Melvin and company was hoping for when they traded top prospect Matt LaPorta in July for Sabathia. Sabathia went and dominated the game for all 9 innings. Sabathia gave up 11 hits over the innings, but surrender only 2 earned runs, 3 runs total. Sabathia also helped his own cause at the plate. He went 2-3 with 2 RBI's and scored a run. Ray Durham had a nice game at the plate, going 3-5 with 3 RBI's. Corey Hart also continued to stay hot as he went 3-4 with 2 RBIS, scoring 2 runs and hitting his 19th home run of the year. The Brewers cruised to an easy 9-3 victory.

Most Valuable Brewer: CC Sabathia, got it done from the mound and at the plate. I am starting to have dreams about Sabathia pitching in a Brewers uniform next year.

Brewers vs. Dodgers Game 3, August 17th

Sunday, was the rubber match between the Milwaukee Brewers and LA Dodgers. Jeff Suppan took the mound for the Brewers and was rocked in the first inning. Andre Ethier hit Suppan's first pitch for the fence, and Manny Ramirez soon followed with a 2-run homer of his own. The Brewers found themselves in a hole ealry. Dodger pitcher Clayton Kershaw, the youngest player in the major leagues, was on top of his game. Kershaw's only blemish was a 4th inning solo home run to Mike Cameron. Kershaw and Suppan left after 6 innings and the Dodgers lead 4-1. The Dodgers added another run and the Brewers trailed 5-1 going into the top of the 9th. Ray Durham hit a 2-RBI single to make the score 3-5. JJ Hardy was retired bringing up Ryan Braun with one on, 2 out and the Brewers still trailing by 2. Braun was down 0-2 in the count when he laced a line drive home run to left field, tying the game at 5. The Brewers were unable to take the lead, but sent Carlos Villanueva to the mound to try and force extra innings. Villanueva gave up a lead off single bringing up Andre Ethier. Either then hammered a Villanueva offering for a 2-run walk off home run. It was a heart breaking loss for the Brewers after fighting back to tie the game in the 9th. Hopefully some home cooking is what the Brewers need as they head back to Milwaukee for a series with the Houston Astros.

Most Valuable Brewer: Ryan Braun, after being out of the starting lineup for a full week. Braun went 2-5 with a 2 run home run. Braun had to have been excited to be playing in front of his hometown crowd. Braun is said to have purchased 200 tickets in left field for friends and family.

Brewers vs. Dodgers Game 2, August 16th

Fresh off of their lose to the Dodgers in Game 1 of the series, Dave Bush took the hill for the Crew against Derek Lowe for the Dodgers. Dave Bush struggled early, giving up a 2 run home run to the second batter he faced, but he was locked in from there. The Brewers were able to put up a run in the top of the 2nd to make it a 2-1 game. from then on it was a pitcher's duel. Bush and Lowe both proceeded to mow down the opposing lineups. The Brewers entered the 8th inning still trailing 2-1. Sensing their time was running short, Brewers skipper Ned Yost pinch hit Ryan Braun for the Dave Bush to lead off the inning. Braun hit a lead off double, but Ray Durham was unable to get him home. JJ Hardy followed with a 2-run homer on a 3-2 pitch. The Brewers took the 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 9th inning. instead of having Brewers closer Salomon Torres start the inning, Yost had Left handed pitcher Brian Shouse start the inning to face Andre Ethier. Shouse walked Ethier, and Torres struggled to get out of the inning against the heart of the Dodger order. Torres induced what looked to be a double play ball to JJ Hardy, but the ball snuck under JJ's glove and into the outfield. The Dodgers tied the game at 3, but Torres was able to work his way out of the inning to force extra innings. In the 10th inning JJ Hardy was given a chance to redeem himself, and he rose to the challenge driving in what would prove to be the winning run. i would be remiss if i did not mention the defense that was played by the outfielders in this game. Corey Hart made a great diving catch in the 2nd, Mike Cameron made a pair of diving catches, but it was Gabe Kapler who stole the show. Kapler robbed Russell Martin of what would have easily been a home run, and almost wound up in the outfield seats himself. This can easily be described as the Brewers catch of the year so far, if not the best catch in all of baseball so far this season.

Most Valuable Brewer: JJ Hardy, JJ went from hero, to goat and back to hero. JJ's bat is a big reason why the Brewers won the game.

Brewers vs. Dodgers Game 1, August 15th

Manny Parra was on the mound for the Crew on Friday as he took on Chad Billingsley of the LA Dodgers. The Brewers started off Hot when Gabe Kapler hit a 2 run home run in the top of the 1st inning. The Dodger's scored a run in the bottom of the 1st. The Brewers got that run back in the bottom of the 2nd to get the lead back to 2. The Crew looked to be cruising with a 3-1 lead going to the bottom of the 4th, then the wheels fell off for Parra. Parra gave up 2 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to end his night. Meanwhile Billingsley settled in and did not allow the Brewers to score again. Dodger slugger Russell Martin added a home run off of Carlos Villanueva in the 8th inning, and the Brewers were never able to recover. The Dodgers won game 1 of the series 5-3. Manny Parra fell to 9-6 on the season and the Cubs and Cardinals each gained a game on the Brewers.

Most Valuable Brewer: Gabe Kapler. Gabe hit his 7th home run of the year, and went 2-4. Gabe has been filling in for the injured Ryan Braun very well this week. Hopefully this consistent time hitting will help to be an even better pinch hitter for the Crew down the stretch.

Brewers vs Padres Game 3, August 14th

Thursday afternoon the Brewers went for the sweep of the San Diego Padres. Ben Sheets took the mound for the Brewers and he took on the reigning NL Cy Young award winner Jake Peavy. To say it was a pitcher's duel early would be an understatement. Throughout the first 6 innings of play there was no score and only 3 hits between the 2 teams. The 7th inning was a different story. Mike Cameron singled in Bill Hall for a 1-0 lead, but that lead would be short lived. Ben Sheets faltered in the bottom of the 7th inning and would give up 3 runs. Despite a solo home run by Mike Cameron in the top of the 9th, the Brewers would fall to the Padres, and their win streak would be snapped at 8 games. Ryan Braun continued to be out of the line up today, but feels optimistic about returning to the starting lineup as the Brewers travel to LA for a weekend with the Dodgers. Let's start a new winning streak.

Most Valuable Brewer: Mike Cameron. Cameron went 2-4 with the Brewers only 2 RBI's and he hit is 20th home run of the year. Cameron also saved the Brewers a run when he went up and robbed a home run in center field.

Brewers vs Padres Game 2, August 13th

The B-52 Bomber, CC Sabathia took the hill for the Brewers on Wednesday to try and stretch the Brewers win streak to 8. CC pitched very well early, but the Padres seemed to be able to put a bat on the ball no matter what he threw. Prince continues to see the ball well, as we all saw a ball leave his bat and get out of the park in a hurry in the 2nd inning. The Brewers added 2 more runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Sabathia continued to pitch well, but gave up a run in the bottom of the 4th to make it a 3-1 game. The Crew got those runs back when Corey Hart hit a bases loaded triple, he would then score on a Craig Counsell sacrifice fly. That was more than enough runs for CC Sabathia. Sabathia found himself in a no outs bases loaded jam, but worked out of it without giving up a run. CC would go 7 strong innings giving up only the 1 run and striking out 8 batters. Riske and Mota each pitched a hittless inning, and the Crew came away with a 7-1 win. The Brewers stretch their winning streak to 8 games and send Sheets to the mound on Thursday to go for 9 in a row and the series sweep.

Most Valuable Brewer: Corey Hart, he went 3-5 with 3 RBI's and a run scored. Corey's average is starting to climb once again, he is now hitting .289. i would love to see that up around .305 by the time September comes around.

Brewers vs Padres Game 1, August 12th

The Brewers traveled to Petco Park for a series with the San Diego Padres. Historically the Crew has really struggled on the West Coast and have been unable to produce a lot of runs. Tuesday night Jeff Suppan took on Cha Seung Baek. Suppan pitched very well early on, and Baek was perfect through 2 innings. Mike Cameron hit a solo home run in his old stomping grounds, in the 3rd inning. Cameron now has 19 home runs on the year, if only he had not missed the first 25 games of the year he would be over 20 already. Prince Fielder added a mammoth blast in the top of the 4th with runners on the corners. When Prince hit it he gave a look into the Brewers dug out, almost as if to see this is too easy, then trotted around the bases. Meanwhile Suppan was pitching very strong. Soup had made only 2 mistakes, unfortunately both of those mistakes were hit out of the ball park. In 8 strong innings of work Suppan gave up only 2 runs on 4 hits. Salomon Torres finally was able to come on for a save opportunity in the 9th and was perfect recording his 23rd save of the year.

Most Valuable Brewer: Mike Cameron, I mentioned that Petco Park was his old stomping grounds. Not only did he hit a home run, but his familiarity with the park really helped his play in center field.

Nationals vs Brewers Game 4, August 11th

Monday afternoon, the Brewers went for the 4 game sweep of the Washionals. Dave Bush was the starting pitcher for the Crew, as he looked to extend the streak of solid starts from our starting rotation. Bush gave up a run in the top of the first, but Rickie Weeks got that run back n a hurry with a led of home run. This was Rickie's 10th home run of the season, and Corey Hart added his 18th in the 4th. Dave Bush settled in after giving up the first inning run, and would not give up any more. Bush pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up 5 hits and one earned run. The Brewers bullpen came in and shut the door as the Brewers cruised to a 7-1 victory and completed the 4 game sweep of the Washionals.

Most Valuable Brewer: Corey Hart, going 2-4 with 2 RBI's, a run, a stolen base, and his 18th home run.

Nationals vs Brewers Game 3, August 10th

After 2 consecutive complete game shut outs, Manny Parra was trying to stretch it to 3. Manny Parra's bid at the complete game shut out was ended in the 6th inning when Lastings Milledge singled in a run. Manny went 7 innings only giving up 1 run and striking out 9. We could not ask anymore from him. Unfortunately, John Lannan for the Washionals was shutting us down the best he could. Lannan did not give up any earned runs in his 6 innings of work, but when he left the game, it was far from over. Eric Gagne gave up 3 runs in the top of the 8th, behind 2 homers by the Washionals. The Brewers had their chance to get the runs back in the bottom of the inning with bases loaded for back up catcher Mike Rivera. Rivera laced a double down the left field line and the bases were now empty with the score tied at 4. The Brewers and Nationals would each squander opportunities to score in the 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th innings. Mota worked his way through the 13th inning, as every Brewer fan held their breath, and Gabe Kapler led off the bottom of the inning. Gabe was fulling in for Ryan Braun, who left Saturday's game with spasms in his lower back, and had been struggling at the plate, going 0-6 so far. Gabe decided to make it 1-7 has he crushed a ball that landed just fair down the left field line, and gave the Crew a 5-4 victory.

Most Valuable Brewer: Mike Rivera, he went 2-3 with 3 RBI's, a stolen base and showed patience at the plate walking 3 times. Not too shabby for your back up catcher. Mr. Rivera please enjoy a nice frosty beverage, you have earned it.

Nationals vs Brewers Game 2, August 9th

Saturday's game had the same look and feel that Friday's game did. Brewers Co-Ace Ben Sheets took the mound against Tim Redding of the Washionals (yes I know i spelled it wrong, that is what i like to call them). Ben was on his A game, and was trying to match CC Sabathia's outing the night before. The Brewers were providing some support at the plate. Ray Durham hit his first home run in a Brewers uniform. JJ Hardy followed with his 17th and Corey Hart added his 17th in the 5th inning. Ben Sheets was getting the job done at the plate when he singled in Jason Kendall for his 5th RBI of the year. Yes, Ben Sheets has 5 RBI's already, what a clutch hitter. Ben would not need much in the form of run support because he was doing his best CC Sabathia impression as Benny went the distance allowing no runs. Ben earned the complete game shut out, striking out 6 batters and only giving up 5 hits. To top it all off, the Cubs lost to the Cardinals, what a good day.

Most Valuable Brewer: Ben Sheets for his work on the mound and his wonderful work at the plate. I embellished a little on the hitting skills, but we all know Benny would want it that way. It feels good to give this award to a starting pitcher 2 days in a row, let's hope we can make a habit of this.

Nationals vs Brewers Game 1, August 8th

Friday, the Crew sent Co-Ace CC Sabathia to the mound, as the Brewers hoped to stretch their winning streak to 3 games. CC was being CC. The big man was mowing down Nationals hitters left and right. Prince Fielder gave Sabathia some run support with an RBI single in the first, and that would be all Sabathia would need. Mike Cameron would hit his 18th home run of the year in the 2nd inning, and JJ Hardy added his 16th home run in the 7th inning. Meanwhile Sabathia was working on what would be his 4th complete game in a Milwaukee Brewers uniform. CC would complete the shut out with only giving up 5 hits and striking out 9 batters in a 5-0 Brewer victory. Hopefully our other ace can keep the run going Saturday night when Ben Sheets takes on Tim Redding of the Nationals.

Most Valuable Brewer: Is there even a question? CC Sabathia, the big man pitched his 4th complete game in 6 starts as a Brewer and improves his record to 6-0 as a Brewer and lowered his ERA to 1.58.

Brewers vs Reds Game 3, August 6th

Jeff Suppan took the hill for the Crew as the tried to win the series against the Reds and go 4-2 on their road trip. Suppan was a little shaky in the beginning, giving up 3 runs in the first 3 innings. Jeff buckled it down from there and ending up pitching 7 innings and giving up only 3 runs. The Brewers offense kept going strong. Believe it or not the Brewers offense was led by Rickie Weeks. Rickie went 4-5 scored a run and had 2 RBI's. Mike Cameron went 3-4 scoring 2 runs and had 1 RBI. Jason Kendall also chipped in with 2 RBI's. The Brewers got a lot of help from players that were struggling. It is nice to the Brewers start to play to some of their potential.

Most Valuable Brewer: No doubt about this one, Rickie Weeks. This is the first time Rickie received this award, so enjoy it kid. After much criticism this year he does deserve to win some kind of positive award, hopefully we will have a few more coming.

Brewers vs Reds Game 2, August 5th

Is it possible that a dugout scuffle could wake up the Brewers and motivate them even more? Unlikely, but it did appear that way Tuesday night. The day after Prince Fielder was seen pushing Manny Parra in the dugout and players were physically restraining Prince, the Brewers bats woke up. The Brewers had to face the young Reds ace Edison Volquez. The Brewers had their bats going early when Cory Hart hit a 2-RBI triple in the first inning. Brewers starter David Bush gave up a run in the bottom of the first, but was dialed in from there on. The Brewers continued to put up 5 total runs on Volquez in 5 innings. In the 7th inning with Ryan Braun on first, Prince Fielder came to the plate to face Nick Masset. After 2 high and inside pitches, that visibly upset Fielder, the next pitch was crushed over the center field wall. JJ Hardy broke out of his slump at the plate too, going 2-5. Meanwhile Dave Bush was looking like he was back on track. Bush went 7 innings, only giving up the 1 run and striking out 7. As the Brewers cruised to a 8-1 victory.

Most Valuable Brewer: Dave Bush. Bush got the start on the road because Yost finally got rid of the platoon of the starting pitchers. Bush pitched very well against a good pitting Reds lineup.

No More Platoon

Brewers manager Ned Yost has done away with the starting pitcher platoon. Yost has named Dave Bush the 5th starter, as he makes the start on the road for the Crew tonight. I am very glad this took place. Starting pitchers need to remain in a rhythm. It was obvious that Bush was taken out of that rhythm when Yost experimented with the starting pitching platoon last month. Hopefully now Yost is done with his little experiments because we are in a pennant race, and the city of Milwaukee is craving some action in October.

Brewers vs Reds Game 1, August 4th

Anybody have any rituals to get rid of long slumps? If so please let myself, the Milwaukee Brewers and JJ Hardy know. I need to get out this rut and find positive things to say about the Crew. The Brewers just flat out need to win, and JJ Hardy needs to remember how to hit after going 0 for his last 26 at bats. The Brewers went into Cincinnati on Monday, and were shut down by Bronson Arroyo. Manny Parra was looking good until the 5th inning came long. Manny gave up a bases loaded double to Reds pitcher Arroyo and ended up giving up 4 runs in the inning. Parra followed by giving up 2 more in the 6th on a Jay Bruce home run. The Brewers had little offense, a homerun by Mike Cameron, and one by Ryan Braun. The Brewers fell to the Reds 6-3. The big story of the game was an altercation that toko place in the Brewers dugout. Manny Parra and Prince Fielder were seen exchanging words, then Prince forcefully pushed Parra to the bench, then again pushed Parra in the face. 4 Brewers quickly rushed to Fielder and pushed up against the fence that separates the field from the dugout. Ryan Braun was one of those players holding Fielder down, and JJ Hardy could be seen yelling at Prince. Brewers skipper, Ned Yost said the incident is no big deal. I agree with Yost. I like to see emotion from our players. However, I do think Prince should be held accountable for going after a teammate. If it is a fine that takes place behind closed doors and we don't know about it then fine. We just cannot make a habit of this type of behavior. Let's see if we can salvage this road trip and get a win tonight.

Most Valuable Brewer: Ryan Braun! Ryan became the second player in major league history to hit 30 home runs in each of his first 2 seasons. The other? Albert Pujols, pretty good company.

Brewers vs Braves Game 3, August 3rd

Once again the Brewers faced Jorge Campillo, and once again it did not end well for the Crew. Campillo was dominate has he pitched 7 innings of shut out ball. The Brewers sent Ben Sheets to the mind with hopes of sweeping the Braves and extended this win streak to 3. Sheets however gave up 2 runs in the first, and one more in the 5th. Ben would only pitch 6 innings giving up 3 runs (2 earned) and only striking out 4. The Brewers continued to struggle offensively as they managed to get 7 hits, but failed to plate any baserunners. The Brewers were shut out by the Braves 5-0.

Most Valuable Brewer: This was a hard game to find someone positive to praise, but Craig Counsell and Gabe Kapler went 2-4. Both players were given the chance to start and get some regular at bats. Both players made the best of their time, even though neither was able to drive in a run.

Brewers vs Braves Game 2, August 2nd

Fresh off of their win Friday night the Brewers sent CC Sabathia to the mound on Saturday. CC gave up a run in the first, but he was spot on from there. As the game went on and on CC appeared to only be getting stronger. CC was making a bid at his 4th complete game as a Milwaukee Brewer. Meanwhile, Prince Fielder, who had homered in each of the last 3 games, extended his homer streak to 4. Prince went yard not once, but twice. Once in the 7th, a solo shot, then again in the 8th a 2-run shot. Prince all of a sudden has 25 home runs on the season, and is coming into his own at the plate. CC was unable to go the distance in this one as he threw 109 pitches in 8 1/3rd innings and struck out 9. CC gave up 2 runs, but that was all he needed. Salomon Torres came on in relief of Sabathia to record his 21st save of the season.

Most Valuable Brewer: Prince Fielder, CC very easily could have been the MVB, but Prince has been the only offense the Brewers have had in the past 4 days. Prince is started to be the leader we need on the field and carry this team on his back. Let's give Prince some help Boys!!!

Brewers vs Braves Game 1, August 1st

The Brewers had 4 games of pent up frustration building after their embarrassing sweep at the hands of the Cubs. The Brewers needed to find a way to get back on the winning track. The solution, go down to Atlanta and take on the Braves. Jeff Suppan made his 3rd start since returning from the DL, and he had one of his best starts of the season. Suppan went 7 strong scoreless innings and giving up only 5 hits and walking 3 batters. Suppan also received the run support that he needed. The Brewers put up 6 runs in the first 3 innings behind a solo home run from Prince Fielder and a 2-run homer off the bat of Mike Cameron. The Brewers added 3 more runs in the 8th inning as they cruised to 9-0 victory. Let's hope the Brewers can keep this run going, and get out of Atlanta with a sweep.

Most Valuable Brewer: Prince Fielder, he has socked a home run in each of the last 3 games. Prince now has 23 on the year. Let's hope the big fella can stay hot and inspire some of the other Brewers to do the same.

Cubs vs Brewers Game 4, July 31st

There really is not a whole lot to say. I really hope that the Brewers use this series as a wake up call and start to put things together. The Brewers were embarrassed by the Cubs 11-4 on Thursday afternoon. The Brewers got swept out of their home stadium, while the eyes of the nation were on them. This series felt a lot like a series in May when the Brewers visited the Boston Red Sox. The Crew has had problems everywhere in this series. Their hitting disappeared, the starting pitching was not up to par, their defense was atrocious, and they played with no confidence. Hopefully the Brewers get right the ship, and get back to winning on Friday night in Atlanta.

Cubs vs Brewers Game 3, July 30th

I am beginning to feel like a broken record, Wednesday's game started out as a pitchers duel between Manny Parra and Ryan Dempster. Then the top of the 6th came around and once again the wheels fell off. The Brewers gave up 3 runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 9th. The Cubs continued to produce at the plate, as they had 14 hits. Oddly enough every Cubs starter had a hit in the game except Derek Lee and Aramis Ramirez. The Brewers lack of clutch hitting was once again noticeable. Manny Parra lead off the bottom of the 3rd inning with a double. The following 3 hitters, which happens to be the top of the order, failed to bring him home. The Brewers were only able to muster 6 hits and 2 runs. Ray Durham scored on a wild pitch in the 1st inning, and Prince Fielder added a solo home run in the 9th. The Brewers are really showing the Cubs and the rest of the nation that they have a lot to prove. Hopefully the Crew can bounce back and return to form in game 4 against newly acquired Cubs pitcher Rich Harden.

Tonight's Most Valuable Brewer: Manny Parra, struggled a in the 6th inning, but kept the team going with his bat going 2-2 with a double and a triple.

Cubs vs Brewers Game 2, July 29th

Tonight's entry will be shorter than normal due to some repressed rage that I have built up inside. My softball team decided to play it's worse game of the year tonight, and the Brewers followed in our footsteps. Ben Sheets took on Carlos Zambrano. It was a pitchers duel through 5 innings, with the Cubs leading 1-0 after scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by Mark DeRosa. Then the wheels fell off in the top of the 6th. To make a long story short, Ben Sheets gave up 5 runs and the Brewers were never able to recover. The Brewers' only run came in the bottom of the 9th when Mike Cameron doubled in Russell Branyan, and the Brewers fell to the Cubs 7-1. I hate to admit it, but it seems that the Cubs are a better team than the Brewers at this point. That does not mean that I think the Cubs will finish ahead of the Brewers, but at this time, the Cubs seem like the stronger team. My hope is that the Brewers take this as a wake up call and find a way to come together as a team to get the job done.

Tonight's Most Valuable Brewer: Mike Cameron, he went 2-3 with the only Brewers RBI, and he also made a couple of nice plays in the field.

Monday, the Milwaukee Brewers hosted their 8th consecutive sellout crowd as they hosted the Central Division leading Chicago Cubs. Newly acquired Brewers Co-Ace CC Sabathia took the hill for the 5th time in a Brewers uniform. Having pitched 3 consecutive complete games, expectations for Sabathia were high. Alfonso Soriano started the game of with a bang as he hit a long doule off of the top of the wall in left-center. Derek Lee singled in Soriano to give the Cubs an early 1-0 lead. Soriano then hit a solo homerun off Sabathia in the top of the third to stretch the Cubs lead to 2-0. Cubs starting pitcher Ted Lilly, had been giving the Brewer hitters fits until the bottom of the 6th when JJ Hardy took Lilly deep for his 15th homerun of the season. Ryan Braun then sent a Ted Lilly pitch deep into the left field bleachers to tie the game at 2. Prince Fielder then singled, and Corey Hart hit a double scoring the big fella all the way from first and giving the Brewers a 3-2 lead. CC Sabathia struggled a little in the 6th, but looked to get out of the inning unscaved when Derek Lee hit a ground ball to JJ Hardy with the bases loaded and 1 out. JJ got the out at 2nd after flipping the ball to Rickie Weeks, but Weeks made a terrible throw to first and 2 runs scored. The Cubs took the lead 4-3 and Sabathia exited the game throwing 124 pitches. Russell Branyan pinch hit in the bottom of the 7th and hit a solo homerun to tie the game at 4. In the top of the 9th, Salomon Torres walked 2 batters with 1 out, then Derek Lee doubled in 1 run followed by a Mark DaRosa RBI-infield single. The Cubs took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the 9th. Cubs closer Carlos Marmol came in and quickly struck out both Bill Hall and Mike Cameron, and walked Jason Kendall. Gabe Kapler sent a sharply hit fly ball to the warning track, where Alfonso Soriano caught it and ended the game. The Brewers fall to the Cubs with a final score of 6-4.

Tonight’s Most Valuable Brewer: Ryan Braun 1-3 with his 29th homerun and 81st RBI of the season.
